DESCRIPTION

The Haudenosaunee (People of the Long House) are a confederacy of six sovereign nations: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora. These are all “other names,” Anglicized forms of their autonym or self-names. Cornell University is located on the unceded land of the Cayuga Nation, thus the name used for these people in Cornell’s library catalog is of particular concern to the presenters. This presentation (based on a book chapter by the presenters in Inclusive Cataloging: Philosophical Questions and Case Studies in Reparative Cataloging) will describe the thought process and methods the authors used to engage with Haudenosaunee leaders to facilitate self-naming in the Library of Congress Subject Headings.

The presenters will also report on what’s happened since the chapter was published, including forthcoming and ongoing changes to the Library of Congress’s guidelines and approaches to representing Indigenous peoples.
