NASIGuide: Serial Holdings Note Fields Only those codes that are usually editable are examined here. For a complete list of note fields, see the Concise MFHD on the MARC web site at http://www.loc.gov/marc/holdings/echdnote.html. Each code is discussed from one or more of three possible aspects, as applicable: conversion/migration, current coding, and/or retrospective coding.
All coding This field is equivalent to the 538 in the bibliographic record, and may be used when a holding for an additional version or copy is attached to a bibliographic record describing the original.
All coding These fields are suitable for rare serials and special-collection items, and give information about provenance, history, etc. Each field allows identification of the part of the serial to which the information applies ($3) and the holding institution or organization ($5). All are also defined for the bibliographic record but can be given in Holdings when they apply to a specific copy.
All coding This field is also defined for the bibliographic record, namely, for specific processing. These are actions relating to preservation, reference, or "solicitation to acquire." Indicators are blank. 19 possible subfields. Format gives numerous examples. Further terminology available from: http://lcweb.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/583terms.html.
All coding Occasionally a textual note or label will be needed to give information on the physical form of a serial in a special format. In this case, only the bibliographic unit, or part, is coded in the 853 $a. Both indicators are blank. 007 may carry the coded designator(s) for the physical form. Example 842 $a binder
Conversion/migration issues The 843 is the equivalent, in the holdings record, of a 533 in a bibliographic record. This tag, 843, is used only when the item described in the bibliographic record is the original. If "multiple versions" have been described in a single bibliographic record, it may or may not be possible to extract the relevant 533 information for the reproduction to put in the holdings 843. It would depend on the means available to identify such records. Fields and subfields of the 843 are identical to those of the 533. Both indicators are blank. Examples (from Format) 843 $a Microfilm. $m Vol. 1, no. 1 (Apr. 1983)-v. 1, no. 3 (June 1983). $b Berkeley, Calif. : $c University of California, Library Photographic Service, $d 1986. $e 1 microfilm reel ; 35 mm. $7 d19831983cauuua 843 00 $a Microfilm. $m Vol. 1, no. 1 (Jan. 1837)-v. 20, no. 12 (Dec. 1856). $b Washington, D.C. $c Library of Congress Photoduplication Service, $d 1971. $e 3 microfilm reels; 35 mm. $n Issues for 1853- 1856 on reel with: Journal of the American Temperance Union and the New York prohibitionist, v. 21, no. 7 (July 1857)-v. 24 (1860).
