North American Serials Interest Group Compensation and Reimbursement Policy Annual Conference and Continuing Education Events NASIG is committed to providing its membership with first-rate programming at the annual conference and at regional continuing education events. In order to attract dynamic, informed, and capable presenters, NASIG provides them with fair and reasonable compensation and reimbursement. As part of the various NASIG awards, recipients receive reasonable reimbursement and compensation to attend the annual conference. NASIG also wishes to compensate fairly the many volunteers who perform vital tasks associated with the conference and continuing education events. The Compensation and Reimbursement Policy is designed to assist the Conference Planning, Program Planning, and Continuing Education committees to be consistent and equitable when presenting reimbursement options, while at the same time allowing for the flexibility needed in dealing with exceptional situations. Exceptions: Any exception to this policy must be submitted t the NASIG Treasurer for consideration by the Executive Board. Compensation: Compensation may be given in the form of waivers from basic continuing education or conference registration fees. Basic conference registration does not include lodging in standard conference housing, or optional events (pre-conferences, tours, extra nights, etc.). Honoraria: NASIG does not pay honoraria to NASIG members, or to NASIG-sponsored speakers outside the NASIG annual conference. Reimbursement: Some speakers may also be reimbursed for certain direct expenses. Direct expenses may include: 1. Travel (plane, train, bus, automobile, etc.) The following compensation and reimbursement is provided: Vision/Plenary Speakers: Each plenary speaker receives a waiver for the basic conference registration, and a maximum of three (3) nights' standard conference housing, regardless of NASIG membership status. Direct expenses not covered by the organization where the plenary speaker is employed may be reimbursed by NASIG with prior approval by the NASIG Treasurer. Under normal circumstances, only two (2) speakers will receive this waiver for each session. Strategies/Concurrent Speakers: Each concurrent/issues speaker receives a waiver for the basic conference registration, regardless of NASIG membership status. No other compensation is provided. Direct expenses not covered by the organization where the concurrent speaker is employed may be reimbursed by NASIG with prior approval by the NASIG Treasurer. Tactics/Workshop Speakers: Each workshop presenter receives a waiver for one-half of the basic conference registration, regardless of NASIG membership status. No other compensation is provided. Under normal circumstances, only two (2) speakers will receive this waiver for each session. Pre-conference Speakers: Each pre-conference speaker receives a waiver for one-half of the basic conference registration and a maximum of two (2) nights' lodging in standard conference housing, regardless of NASIG membership status. Direct expenses not covered by the organization where the pre-conference speaker is employed may be reimbursed by NASIG with prior approval by the NASIG Treasurer. Under normal circumstances, only two (2) speakers will receive this waiver for each session. All Other Presenters (including Moderators Facilitators for sessions other than those specified above): No compensation is provided. Award Recipients: Each winner of a Student Grant, a Horizon Award, the Mexican Student Award or the Fritz Schwartz Scholarship receives a one-year membership in NASIG and a waiver for the basic conference registration, including ½ of the double room rate for three (3) nights of standard conference housing. NASIG will assign a roommate or the award recipient may make arrangements with another attendee, or make up the difference. Travel expenses are paid by NASIG. Each grant winner receives $75 in advance to cover incidental expenses. No other compensation is provided. No conference-related compensation is provided to recipients of the Marcia Tuttle International Grant. Continuing Education Speakers: Each continuing education speaker receives a waiver for the continuing education event fee, regardless of NASIG membership status. Direct expenses not covered by the organization where the continuing education speaker is employed may be reimbursed by NASIG with prior approval by the NASIG Treasurer. If NASIG supplies a speaker for a continuing education event for another conference, that conference is responsible for waiving the registration fee. Board Meeting Attendees: Each Board member and incoming Board member receives reimbursement for two nights' lodging in standard conference housing to attend the Board meeting the day prior to the annual conference. Two dinners and lunch during the meeting are provided. Miscellaneous expenses, such as parking fees, may also be covered. Board members who are attending ALA midwinter only to attend the NASIG Executive Board meeting will be reimbursed by NASIG for their travel expenses. Invited guests to the Board meeting may be given the same reimbursement, depending on when they are scheduled into the agenda. [Per NASIG Board Meeting Reimbursement Policy, adopted 10/97] Conference Planning Committee (CPC): Each appointed CPC member for the current conference receives a waiver for the basic conference registration, excluding standard conference housing. UKSG President: The UKSG President or designee receives a waiver for the basic conference registration and standard conference housing as part of a reciprocal arrangement with that organization. Volunteers at the Conference Host Site (Non-CPC members): All other host site volunteers will be allowed to drop in at a few conference sessions at no cost, if space permits. All Others: No compensation is provided except reimbursement of expenses as approved in the budget. Approved by the NASIG Board 11/10/00
