Student Outreach Ambassador Guidelines
Purpose of these guidelines: To assist ambassadors in increasing the overall visibility of NASIG to LIS program students, faculty, and staff. Suggested Activities for Ambassadors: - Establish and maintain a strong relationship with assigned program using existing communication channels to increase awareness of NASIG and NASIG sponsored activities (contact can be formal or informal)
- Foster a collaborative relationship with a contact person at the school
- Contact person should be the dean, director or a faculty member (preferably a faculty member whose coursework includes serials related content)
- Contact should be frequent enough to keep lines of communication open
- Request to join public listservs, myspace or other social networking communities where students and/or faculty gather (physically and virtually)
- Serve as a resource person
- Identify the student organization associated with the LIS program
- Make contact with the president of the organization
- Introduce yourself and NASIG
- Request an on-site presentation
- Share NASIG promotional information and other benefits
- Promote NASIG student awards and other events
- Become familiar with NASIG resources
- Identify continuing education programs at the school to determine how NASIG and the school can partner together
- Share information on NASIG workshops, lectures, conferences, forums, etc.
- Make use of NASIGuides and other public materials available on the NASIG website
- Keep abreast of the needs of the faculty and students and seek opportunities to promote serials work in general and NASIG in particular
- Become familiar with their school's curriculum, especially those courses being taught that might be relevant to NASIG's mission, and work with faculty teaching those courses in particular.
- Identify NASIG colleagues who are near the school who may be willing to assist as
- Mentors
- Guest lecturers
- Presenters of current research and issues in serials work
- Attend library school programs when possible
- Keep in contact with their Student Outreach Committee member liaison for clarification or help or ideas or anything else they need.
- Maintain their school's information page on the Student Outreach Committe's webpage that includes:
- Physical addresses, phone numbers, and email addressees for the school
- Dean's name and contact information
- Other potentially useful contacts like faculty, students, and librarians
- Calendar of pertinent school events (if available)
- Known NASIG members who are alumni
- Information about and instructions for joining school related listservs (e.g. student lists, alumni lists, etc.).
- An ambassador activity sheet on which to document NASIG involvements with the school
- Any additional pertinent information about the school.
