POSITION DESCRIPTIONS
COLUMNS EDITOR

The Columns Editor works closely with the Editor-in-Chief and other Newsletter Editorial Board members to ensure timely and effective production of the NASIG Newsletter, and to develop and implement improvements for its process, policies, content, structure, and appearance.
Production of individual Newsletter issues often requires short periods of intensive work within short turn-around times. Members of the Newsletter Editorial Board routinely find this commitment requires occasional evening and/or weekend hours.
There may be more than one columns editor with specific assigned tasks. As of 2004, the Newsletter has two: one who manages the Title Changes column, the other working on ideas for Calling All Serialists (a column devoted to NASIG member trivia and information) or other recurring columns.
Specific, routine tasks of the Columns Editor position:
* Provide "Title Changes" column for each issue
* With the Editor-in-Chief, maintain content guidelines for "Title Changes"
* Arrange for individual NASIG members who are known to have had job changes to submit
information or written announcements for "Title Changes"
* Receive all individual submissions for "Title Changes" and compile them into one article
* Review all submissions for basic grammar, punctuation, missing information, etc.; make any
necessary modifications
* Input basic style and formatting elements, based on the Style Sheet
* Send column to the Editor-in-Chief by each issue's submission deadline
Columns Editor 2
* Provide ideas and solicit submissions for the Calling All Serialists columns, which may be published once or twice a year
* Assume responsibility for other recurring articles as they are added to the Newsletter's content schedule.
* Receive all individual submissions for "Title Changes" and compile them into one article
* Review all submissions for basic grammar, punctuation, missing information, etc.; make any necessary modifications
* Input basic style and formatting elements, based on the Style Sheet
* Send column to the Editor-in-Chief by each issue's submission deadline
REQUIRED QUALITIES AND SKILLS: reliability; flexibility; initiative; creativity; effective communication and organization skills; dedication to producing a high quality and timely product; ability to maintain good working relationships with others, esp. within a geographically dispersed team; convenient use of an e-mail program that handles attachments; effective writing skills
DESIRED QUALITIES AND SKILLS:
basic skills with a recent Windows version of Microsoft Word
